Ch. 2 Theory and Practice: Foundations for Effective Technology Integration

This chapter describes the four factors that help create the recipe for effective technology integration strategies. These factors include: Learning theory foundations, Technological pedagogical content knowledge, Integration planning model, and Essential conditions for integration.  As technology has become more capable and complex, our views of education and appropriate teaching strategies have changed along the way. Many educators believe that the world is changing too quickly to define education in terms of specific information or skills. They believe it should focus more on general capabilities, which will help future citizens cope with inevitable technological change.

Teachers need a planning approach to ensure their strategy will be successful. The technology integration planning (TIP) model benefits teachers by giving them a general approach to address challenges involved in integrating technology into teaching. Each of the models SIX phases outlines a set of planning and implementation steps that help ensure technology use will be meaningful, efficient, and successful in meeting needs.

1.       Phase 1 focus: What is my technological pedagogical content knowledge?
       2.       Phase 2 focus: What should I use a technology bases method?
       3.       Phase 3 focus: How will I know students have learned?
       4.       Phase 4 focus: What teaching strategies and activities will work best?
       5.       Phase 5 focus: Are essential conditions in place to support technology integration?
       6.       Phase 6 focus: What worked well? What could be improved?

Teachers need system-wide support to implement technology. The school, district, local community, and state share a commitment to using technology to support teaching and learning.  Teachers and administration need to have a shared vision and all technology plans should reflect certain qualities. These qualities include: 1. Coordinate school and district planning, and involve teachers and other personnel at all levels, 2. Budget yearly amounts for technology purchases and make funding incremental, 3. Emphasize teacher training, 4. Match technology to curriculum needs, and 5. Keep current and build in flexibility.

  1. I think that it is very difficult to define education in terms of specific knowledge. There are so many different skill set that can be beneficial to a person throughout their life time that boxing education into very specific categories is becoming increasingly difficult. By integrating technology into lessons teachers have the ability to easily incorporate multiple content areas while developing everyday skills that might not be directly outlined and defined as a content standard. The TIP model is a way that teachers who may be uncomfortable with technology or even experienced teachers can make sure they are using technology in the most beneficial manner.

  2. I believe that the TIP model will be a great planning approach for us to use when we become teachers. I agree that it helps to ensure that technology use will be meaningful, efficient, and successful in meeting needs. The TIP model encourages us to think carefully about how we use technology in the classroom. It is always important to analyze how we will know students have learned as well as the teaching strategies and activities we plan to use in the lesson. This will help to ensure that the technology use is meaningful. I also like that it includes a phase for reflection. It is important to reflect on what worked well and what needs improvement. This is a way for us to ensure that technology use in our classroom is successful in meeting the needs of our students.
